About Auckland

With a population of over 1.45 million people, Auckland is the largest metropolitan area in both Polynesia and New Zealand. Situated in the northern half of the North Island, Auckland is on a narrow strip of land that joins the Northland peninsula to the rest of the North Island.

The city has shares urban planning designs with its sister city, Los Angeles and have developed within the same frame. Today, the city is lined by two large harbours called Waitemata and Manukau on the east and west ends as well as the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea.

Auckland is home to the largest Polynesian population in the world. In the Māori language, Auckland is Tāmaki or Tāmaki-makau-rau, which means "Tāmaki with a hundred lovers" and refers to the desirability of its fertile land at the hub of waterways in all directions. It has also been called Ākarana.

Classified as a Beta + World City due to its influence on education, commerce and the arts, Auckland boasts major landmarks such as the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Harbour Bridge, the Sky Tower, and many museums, parks, restaurants and theatres. Auckland Airport sees roughly one million international passengers every month. Even though it is one of the most expensive cities in the world, Auckland is ranked third on the 2016 Mercer Quality of Living Survey, making it one of the most liveable cities.
